A practical guide to the implementation of a training course to detect illiteracy

Erasmus+ / France Education Formation, in the context of the EAAL (European Agenda for Adult Learning), the ANLCI (National Agency for the Struggle against Illiteracy) and the FPSPP (Joint Fund to Secure Career Paths) has developed an e-learning programme for self-training, offered to careers advice stakeholders, which particularly targets the detection of functional illiteracy.

The training module offers simple and effective solutions to detect illiteracy, to approach the subject in a way which will analyse the person's needs, so as to support and guide him towards a training solution which suits his situation and career path, and to develop effective cooperation with training organisations.

In 2017, an external evaluation of the platform was carried out through a method of participatory evaluation which involved user groups, the aim being to assess the impact of training on professional practices.

Results: the platform's data was analysed for the first time (in April 2017) revealing that at this point, out of the 1,700 people registered, 2/3 had completed the entire course.

Analysis of the platform data

Evaluation of terms of reference

Users met subsequently in working groups to carry out a qualitative investigation. The summary shows that

• 91% of trainees improved their awareness of illiteracy and its issues

• 88% were better able to identify clues indicating illiteracy

• 70% have been able to put the content of the proposed training course into practice

• 81% have adapted their behaviour when encountering situations of illiteracy

Summary of terms of reference:

A practical guide, published in October 2017, has been drawn from this assessment in order to facilitate the dissemination and use of the content of the training course. Used to support stakeholders in the use of the training platform, it gives the panorama of the possible uses of the different modules proposed, according to the projects and goals: DIGITAL TRAINING GUIDE TO UNDERSTAND, IDENTIFY AND DEAL WITH SITUATIONS OF ILLITERACY

It will be presented during the Winter University of Vocational Training in February 2018 (UHFP, Biarritz), and published through the EAAL networks, ANLCI (newsletters), Erasmus+ and EPALE.
