Adult participation in lifelong learning, i.e. the percentage of the population aged 25-64 participating in education and training during the 4 weeks prior to the survey. (Note: This is a pragmatic definition for EU purposes, in relation to the EC benchmark as calculated by the Labour Force Survey; a full dictionary definition would be much wider, and definitions used in other surveys will differ).

Abilities that help people to adapt and behave positively so that they can deal effectively with the challenges of everyday life. In OECD’s Adult Literacy and Life Skills survey (2002), the term particularly refers to problem-solving.
