Cultural heritage and European Citizenship- strengthening European Identity

    Taal: nl

Natural and cultural heritage sites, monuments, museums and intangible cultural assets offer the ideal context for learning. This doesn’t only concern learning about heritage but also learning through heritage and for heritage. It ideally is active, participative, competence driven and validated and relates to the meaning making and value frames of the visitors/participants. This view was shared by Guy Tilkin with the participants of the TCA international conference 'Paths towards Citizenship through European Cultural Heritage' in Palermo from 26 to 29 September 2018.

Improving learning in heritage contexts: narratives for interpretation

    Taal: en

The famous psychologist J. Bruner postulates that we use two ways of thinking: “a paradigmatic and a narrative one”. Both ways of thinking play a role in heritage interpretation. Facts, figures and objective truth are indeed important but most important in interpretation is to relate them to the meaning making frame of the visitor. Here the stories come in. The major argument for introducing storytelling in guided tours and mediated interpretation is the fact that stories are offered through a ‘narrative pattern’. Guy Tilkin from the cultural heritage site Alden Biesen in Belgium wrote a blog about it.

Heritage Interpretation: enhancing (adult) learning in heritage contexts

    Taal: en

In his blog, Guy Tilkin, general manager of the heritage site Alden Biesen in Belgium, says it is clear that learning nowadays is no longer confined to schools and colleges. Learning takes place everywhere. Natural and cultural heritage sites, monuments and museums offer the ideal context for learning and interpretation and offer ideal techniques to make this learning as meaningful as possible. Heritage interpretation can be seen as a structured approach to non-formal education, specialised in communicating significant ideas about a place to the public. Therefore it is high time to focus on the specific qualifications of the professionals in the field of heritage interpretation.
