Interview with 5 adult learners of the 9+i (9th grade for asylum seekers in Luxembourg)

Diane (the name was altered) is from Ethiopia, she arrived in August 2016 in Luxembourg. She took beginners French at the Institut National des Langues for about a month. In October 2016 she started her training in the 9+ i. Here she is studying French, Mathematics and English. Diane has an Ethiopian high school diploma. She is progressing very well in her studies. Her goal is to work with elderly people in a retirement home.

9 + I is the final class of the lower secondary education it gives access to vocational education training (VET). Diane will further her training with an apprenticeship in care assistance.

 

Alipanah Paria arrived in Luxembourg in December 2015. For 3 months she took French language courses at the Institut National des Langues. In September 2016 she started her training in the 9+ i. She is currently studying French, English and Mathematics. She would like to continue her training to become a hairdresser and eventually open her own hair salon.

9 + I is the final class of the lower secondary education it gives access to vocational education training (VET). Alipanah Paria will continue her training with a hairdresser apprenticeship.

 

Ali arrived in Luxembourg in 2015. At the age of 14 he completed the 8th grade in Iraq. Since then, almost 4 years have passed in which he had no formal schooling at all. The 1st school he attended since the 8th grade was the Ecole de la 2e Chance in Hollerich, Luxembourg. He took French, English, Luxembourgish and Mathematics. There he completed the levels A1 and A2. Since October 2016 he is enrolled in the 9+ i. He is confident in the English language and with this in mind, he is positive that he will be able to master the French and Mathematics as well. Since Ali is 18 years old, he is still eligible to attend a regular 10th grade high school class. His goal is to work for the Luxembourgish army.

The 9 + I is a stepping stone and will enable Ali to succeed in a 10th grade high school or in adult education.

 

Aiodele Oriade is 28 years old, she is from Nigeria and arrived in Luxembourg in 2014. She had no formal schooling for 12 years. She started taking French language classes at a level A1 (beginner) at the Institut National des Langues. Since October 2016 she is attending the 9+ i. Her subjects include: French (B2), Maths and English (B2). In addition to being enrolled in the 9+ i (daytime school) she is taking Luxembourgish evening courses. She is currently aiming for a degree in health care assistance.

The 9+i gives Aiodele formal access to VET in the field of health care assistance by means of an adult apprenticeship.

Mohamed is 23 years old and from Iraq. He completed his baccalaureate in Bagdad and had attended 3 years of management courses at a university in Bagdad. In September 2015 he arrived in Luxembourg. Since January 2016 he is attending the 9+ i. Since then he has completed the levels A1 and A2 in French, English and Mathematics. He is currently working towards the levels A2 and B1 in these subjects. His goal is to continue his studies in the field of Administration and Commerce.

The 9+i gives Mohammed formal access to VET in Administration and Commerce by means of an adult apprenticeship.
