Supervision is a space for reflection – we learn looking back at our experience. It helps us understand our tasks, work ethics, challenges, and solutions. It may be a space where we can ask and give emotional support. But sometimes it is not a part of our setting or the kind of supervision we have is not sufficient.
One way is to talk to colleagues and briefly discuss some questions. But when we work alone as independent consultants it is challenging to have regular supervision, especially when we are not a part of any kind of training. Peer supervision means that few colleges with similar work experience talk about their work. We all do that – a few sentences about the task, asking for advice in some specific situation, etc. If we need some regular meetings, how can we organize it?
Call colleagues that you already cooperate with
If you have few colleagues that are already your choice for discussion, ask them to formalize those conversations a little bit. Ask them to be a part of a group of colleagues that will meet periodically and supervise each other's work. If you want to meet new people, ask them to call one of their colleagues. When forming the group consider any potential confidentiality issues and conflict of interest, for example, some companies have strong policies regarding talking about their practice anywhere outside of the company.
Choose time and date
Schedule supervision in advance and make it a priority. Otherwise, it will be easy to postpone, forget it and similar. If you all work together it may be part of regular working hours. We all have busy lives and it is good to know how we can fit in supervision.
Choose a safe and nurturing space
Find a space that is convenient and comfortable for all. It may be someone’s house, office, coworking space or a nice restaurant. Also, it can be online using Skype and other versions of conference calls.
On the first meeting, it is useful to discuss what would you like to get from the supervision and what may be challenging. For example, will there be someone else responsible for the organization? We are all familiar with the group rules and contracts and this is also one place to apply them.
This is a task and something we choose to do because we find it important. Defining clearly why it is important for us helps us stay motivated.
