Digital technology creates challenges for teachers, teacher trainers and professional development. This paper looks at the current situation with digital technology in Maltese schools. Drawing on experiential evidence, it posits digital technology in schools in a broader context, arguing that the challenge is that of providing for a “good education” that goes beyond digital technology, calling for a paradigm shift with an emphasis on the learning processes involved in teaching. It then presents the Pestalozzi Programme and the European Module Series on “Respect - Responsible Attitudes and Behaviour in the Virtual Social Space” as a case study for the professional development of teachers.

    Dear Nives and Claudio,

    Following to our previous communication on the topic of "Challenges For Teachers And Teacher Trainers" I came across this interesting article on Professional Development where it advocates that it is not about the occasional seminar or workshop one attends but rather about thinking our work, improving what we do and challenging each other to address old and new issues in innovative ways.

    The article talks about the Train the Trainer Programme and gives the example of Maltese educators.

    Without doubt, any type of teaching/lecturing has its own challenges. Some might be handled through the teacher's experience and skill-set, others may need a more holistic approach, for example, allowing more time and be more patient.

    However, some aspects in relation to teaching need to be seriously addressed, such as, (i) the number of students in class should be small, (ii) the various resources available, (iii) more collaboration between professionals. These might be some of the elements which might need to be looked into.

    Another aspect would be the need for more dialogue rather than a 'syllabus' to start and finish. Dialogue make friendships possible and therefore, trust takes place between the teacher/learner. I have experienced that, when barriers are eliminated, people are more engaged and interested in what you have to say, and all the more when, what you have to share with them will make their life easier and more profitable.

    So, as a last word...let's keep up all the good work and continue to encourage each other.

    Thank you for posting this interesting paper.

    Reading it I reaffirmed what I already suspected: teachers are in a constant race to catch up with the ever growing sophistication of students as well as their colleagues. This is owed by far to the overwhelming availability of free online information in the form of tutorials, videos, papers etc. and it's not just the case for Malta...
