More Education for Tolerant Europe

The most important characteristic of a human being in a rich interactive situation is tolerance of difference. How to live with differences is a question that has always interested people and the educational world. The best response is always to encourage intercultural dialogue through all forms of collaborating with other policies makers and stakeholders in the EU context. (Declaration on promoting citizenship and the common values of freedom, tolerance, and non-discrimination through education – Paris, March 2015).

The Erasmus+ KA2 project partnership" MORE EDUCATION FOR TOLERANT EUROPE" comprises five partners from  Poland, Malta, Italy, Portugal and Cyprus. The project aimed at countering influences that lead to fear and exclusion of others and helping adult people develop independent judgment, critical thinking, and ethical reasoning. The METE project also supported adult educators in improving tolerance culture and diversity respect in their learner's groups.

During more than two years of the project, project partners have organised various workshops, training courses, and other events(both online and offline), aiming to improve and enrich teaching tools in adult education for trainers and staff working with adults.

The methods and tools used in those events were gathered in one" METE" training e-book available online (see here), ready to implement and use by adults training centres and schools across Europe. The e-book also includes good practice gathered from Poland, Malta, Italy, Portugal and Cyprus.

Some of those methodologies/tools are:

 

  • Cultural Intelligence (CQ) model

The CQ Model is a framework that builds the capability of cultural intelligence. The CQ Model emphasises the importance of developing an overall repertoire of motivation, understanding, strategy and skills that enables one to move in and out of lots of different cultural contexts (Ang & Van Dyne, 2008).

The model has been extensively developed and operationalised by the brilliant Dr David Livermore PhD. It can be applied to culturally intelligent policy development, program design, and community engagement.

 

  • Designing a positive message against hate speech

A methodology used to fight against hate campaigns is based on disseminating positive messages through awareness campaigns whose purpose is to mitigate and counter the incitement to hate speech against migrants, refugees and minorities. This can be done through the active involvement of local communities in the creation and sharing of counter-narratives, which effectively contrast xenophobic discourses. Therefore, it is vital to foresee the creation of stakeholders' coalitions to develop the counter-narratives that can denounce incitement to hatred e the negative representation of migrants and refugees.
