Lindeman u svom djelu The Meaning of Adult Education, uvijek polazi od pretpostavke prihvaćanja postojećeg iskustva kod odraslih polaznika. „Iskustvo je živuća bilježnica odraslih polaznika“ (Lindeman, 1926,10). Iako se to pretpostavljalo, tek je Edward L. Thorndike sa svojom publikacijom Adult Learning (1928) znanstveno potvrdio kako odrasle osobe imaju sposobnost učenja.
