As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, older people are particularly at risk of feeling isolated or they may simply have more time on their hands than others. Language exchanges abroad are being partly suspended, making practicing foreign languages even more difficult for young people who would have otherwise been able to organise a trip abroad or attend a structured language course in another EU country. ShareAmi allows young people who want to practice their French the chance to improve while promoting the active engagement of older people at risk of isolation and social exclusion.

OER: The Role of Intergenerational Learning in Adult Education

The World Health Organisation (WHO) Global Age-Friendly Cities (AFC) Guide classifies key characteristics of an AFC according to eight domains. Whilst much age-friendly practice and research have focused on domains of the physical environment, those related to the social environment have received less attention. Using a Photovoice methodology within a Community-Based Participatory Research approach, our study draws on photographs, interviews and focus groups among 26 older Liverpool residents (60+ years) to explore how the city promotes respect and social inclusion (a core WHO AFC domain).

While it is not very important to know that life is limited when you are young, it makes you think more when you start to age. If a well-passed youth and adulthood does not provide ego integrity in old age, the person continues to work and socialize more than before. Therefore, accompanying a strong physics as well as a strong memory makes his life easier this afternoon. While the things to do for a good physics are often discussed a lot, it is thought as if there is not much to do for a good memory, and it is always thought to go downhill. However, development is lifelong.

The education of older adults has been considered the fastest growing branch of adulteducation in post-industrial countries and one of the most crucial challenges facing current adult European education (Formosa, 2000). Early research on the learning preferences, motivations and trends of older persons – as well as the impact of learning on the quality of life of older learners – can be traced to the 1950s (Havighurst, 1953), even before the field of educational gerontology was formally established in the 1975 by David Peterson (1976).

Socialna vključenost starejših je ena vodilnih politik Evropske komisije. V preteklih programskih obdobjih in v številnih instrumentih in programih financiranja EU so ga nenehno spodbujali.

Are adults occupying different streets, held back by other priorities or even unwelcome in the activist spaces? Recent articles have raised the concern that ageism has crept into parts of contemporary social movements. Ageism refers to stereotyping or discriminating against individuals or groups on the basis of their age. Take a moment to think, if you have ever been subject to ageist discrimination. Do you think one can be too old to be an activist, too young to be heard in the media?

Today, individuals of all ages attend self-enhancement classes, conferences, or workshops and use computer learning.  Learning in later life remains a potent force in maintaining mental alertness and physical health and for keeping in touch with life and the world. Lifelong learning is rapidly becoming routine for senior adult learners (1).

Teaching senior adult learners is a process that needs to be conducted thoroughly and cautiously. You will find some rocommendations and tips below to carry out this process efficiently and to avoid undesired situations:

Intergenerational learning (IL) is where people of all ages can learn together and from each other, classically common within families where knowledge is shared down the generations. More recently however it is seen as being facilitated with wider social groups outside the family circle. Academics, including Kaplan (2002) and Vanderbeck & Worth (2015) suggest the newer model contributes to the socialisation of the young and focuses on relationships.

A group of older people in Wales meet on Zoom to share their memories of 2020. Of emotional visits from grandchildren, of neighbours leaving home-cooked meals on the doorstep, of feelings of fear and lethargy but also optimism.

This isn’t a social catch up, however; it’s a rehearsal of a new digital theatre production that shines a light on elders’ experiences of the pandemic and challenges the portrayal of older people as vulnerable.
