Promoting Intercultural Competence in Adult Education

Explore how IntCultAE equips adult educators with tools to teach, live, and lead in diverse intercultural contexts.

As the IntCultAE | Intercultural Competence Development for Adult Education project nears its conclusion, we reflect on a timely and impactful initiative that addresses one of the most pressing needs in contemporary education: the ability to understand, respond to, and thrive in intercultural contexts.

Coordinated by a University from Poland (UNIWERSYTET LODZKI), with partners from Portugal (AidLearn, Consultoria em Recursos Humanos), Italy (EURO-NET), Greece (Ekpaideftiria Kaloskami S.A.), and Germany (Erasmus ME Academy gGmbH), IntCultAE was born from the recognition that living together in diversity is no longer optional—it is essential. Against the backdrop of global migration, rising populism, and deepening divides, equipping educators and learners with intercultural competences is a powerful response to promote mutual respect, inclusion, and democratic values.

🎯 Why Intercultural Competence?

Building on conceptual frameworks from UNESCO, the Council of Europe, and researchers like Deardorff, the project views intercultural competence as the ability to effectively engage across differences - be they cultural, ethnic, religious, or social. These skills are especially vital in adult education, where educators work closely with diverse learner populations, including migrants, refugees, and other underrepresented groups.

Yet many educators report feeling unprepared to address intercultural challenges or unsure how to integrate cultural content into their practice. IntCultAE seeks to close this gap with creative and accessible learning tools.

🧰 Project Outcomes

The IntCultAE project has focused on developing resources to support adult educators in building their intercultural skills and applying them in real-world educational settings. While some final products are still being finalized, they will be available soon and include:

  • An Online Training Course on intercultural competences, designed for flexible and independent learning
  • A Media Catalogue, including films and scenes from fictional scenarios, to stimulate reflection and discussion
  • A Workshop Guide offering ready-to-use activities for in-person workshops, with adaptable formats ranging from 2 to 6 hours
  • Practical insights and short films Case Studies showcasing positive examples of intercultural dialogue and adaptation across Europe

These resources are rooted in intercultural theory but designed for everyday teaching practice, making them accessible, meaningful, and engaging for adult educators across all sectors.

🤝 Follow the Journey

Though the project is ending, our work and impact will continue. We invite you to explore the project’s website and follow us on social media to access the final outputs, share our resources, and join the growing conversation on how education can help build a more inclusive Europe.
