KSL Study Centre (KSL-opintokeskus) is an adult education institute in Finland. It is owned by 17 associations, but is mainly funded by the Ministry of Education.
KSL works in the fields of liberal adult education, vocational further training and cultural activities. It is an exceptional education institute in a way that you can't find our "school building" anywhere. Most of the educational courses and cultural events are organized in cooperation with associations and NGOs and can take place anywhere in Finland and in very different kinds of venues, for instance in the organizing NGO's own office, a library or a hotel cabinet, or as a pop-up workshop during a festival. The way of organizing courses and cultural events is very flexible. Low access and everyone's right to learn are the essential ideas.
KSL's main office with 11 employees (management, pedagogues, office work) is in Helsinki. There is also one pedagogue (educational content producer) working in northern Finland and one in Tampere. In addition, there are trainers and teachers, who work in KSL as freelancers. Critical pedagogy and learning-by-doing are KSL's pedagogigal priorities. Pedagogical know-how in experiential learning and different kinds of pedagogical methods are some of KSL's strong assets.
When it comes to our cultural activities, KSL specializes in low threshold cultural activism and craftivism that is aimed for everyone, not as viewers and consumers, but as active doers and change-makers.
Management of our study centre is done with the help of a quality management system based on ISO 9001 standard. KSL is a learning organization that always wants to develop and be better. Interaction and dialogue with colleagues always gives a chance to learn - and learning is highly appreciated in KSL.
