Thinking of joining one of the educational programmes provided by the European Commission? Consider availing yourself of the funding available through the European Union Programmes Agency (EUPA).

As an adult educator – or even aspiring adult educator – you may be interested in furthering your own skills in the sector. This is exactly where the European Union Programmes Agency (EUPA) could help you, or your adult learning institution, by connecting you with funds and schemes that could make your goals a reality.

Leading the Adult Education sector within EUPA is Brian Schembri, in the role of Head of Unit Vocational (VET) & Adult Education. He explains that EUPA is an agency that supports Maltese individuals and entities, helping them to avail themselves of funding under the various educational programmes provided by the European Commission.

“As of 2014, EUPA has coordinated the implementation of the funding programme Erasmus+,” he says. “And, since 2017, EUPA has also coordinated the implementation of the European Solidarity Corps (ESC).”

In that time, EUPA has managed a number of key achievements by ensuring the maximum absorption of Erasmus+ funds to local individuals and organisations. “This created opportunities for mobility, capacity-building and sharing of good practices funded by the Erasmus+ programme,” he says.

This is, of course, an opportunity for adult education institutions to access funds, as well as individuals. To do this, Mr Schembri advises applying for funds for staff mobility, as well as participating in strategic partnerships that provide opportunities for the capacity building of the organisation through the exchange of good practices.

“In the past we have seen institutions – often of the small or medium variety – successfully use these funds for immediate capacity building, as well as longer-term results,” Mr Schembri continues. “This is ideal because, often, they find the training to be very valuable when it comes to boosting their administration skills through mobility. Alternatively, institutions have even found the skills gained through the process helped them to reach out to hard-to-reach applicants.”

Giving his tips for how individuals and institutions can make the most of this service, Mr Schembri highlights the fact that deadlines for individual mobilities calls are usually in February, while partnership calls are in March.

“Beyond that, my recommendation is to approach us here at EUPA as soon as possible, and to pass on project briefs that consist of a strong needs-analysis and a project plan that effectively addresses the identified need. We will then provide further assistance to ensure your application is eligible,” he concludes.

A teacher by profession, since 2012 I have been working at the European Union Programmes Agency (EUPA) and since November 2016 within the same Agency, I have been heading the Adult and VET Unit. In my role of Programme Manager I manage a unit that supports entities in these two fields to avail themselves efficiently of funding under the Erasmus+ programme supported by the European Commission. For a period I also worked in the private sector having worked for five years as Manager/Team Leader in one of the leading furniture retail companies in Malta. Finally, I also have an extensive experience in sports management as I was club president for nine years  of one of the leading local waterpolo clubs and I am still active till today in the Club’s administration
