For the European project ECIL, European Certificate of Intergenerational Learning supported by European Commission, Slovenian Third Age University collected and discussed a number of good practices which according to theory of intergenerational learning corresponded best to what intergenerational learning is all about.
In the case of the project My Streets led by Divja Misel there was intentional learning about other generations, and mutual informal learning of generations working together in a creative process. Intergenerational ties were created by generations jointly performing a meaningful activity (interviewers were younger people who for the needs of their project were learning from their interviews, organising and structuring their thought in order to publish it, interviewees were older inhabitants of Ljubljana who were asked to think about what might be interesting for younger generations to know.
My streets was a project collecting testimonials and stories about Ljubljana as it used to be. Personal stories and memories create the topography of the city of Ljubljana. The project had two faces. One was turned towards the past, the other to the future. In the first part of the project interesting interlocutors were searched for. Long conversations with them were taped and unknown heroes were met. Individuals of all ages were motivated to make a present of their experiences to the community. Stories were collected face to face through conversations face to face, but they were also collected by phone and members of Divja misel were happy to find them in their mailbox. These stories were also collected each Sunday as they were presented to the general public in the Botanic Gardens Ljubljana.
In the second part of this project thus collected stories were shaped and published in such a way that they are interesting for all generations. The project was about transmitting memories and thus it was important to have them in a right shape. They had to be readable and attractive. Stories got alive on the Radio Študent’s web page but also in the Botanic garden where through summer months stories were told. There was also a radio programme. My streets and a film about the city café Union has been shot. Together with the City Museum of Ljubljana Divja misel started collecting memories and old family photos. A collection of these stories accompanied by the collected photos was staged as an exhibition. Photos were contributed by the Museum of Recent History of Slovenia. The stories have been inserted in the archives of the City Museum of Ljubljana and in the Galery of Ljubljana.
Dušana Findeisen, Slovenian Third Age University
Dr. Dušana Findeisen, is a professional expert for active ageing, intergenerational learning, volunteering and education of elderly people. In 1984, together with prof. dr. Ana Krajnc, they founded the Third Age University in Ljubljana, where she develops and explores third age education – its importance for the elderly and society.
