AONTAS is delighted to announce the first meeting of the National Adult Learner Forum will be held on Friday 26th February during the AONTAS Adult Learners Festival. The National Adult Learner Forum will provide a space for learners who are currently in further education and training to come together and have a unique opportunity to directly influence the further education and training service based on their needs.

What is the National Adult Learner Forum:

The National Adult Learner Forum will provide a space for learners who are currently in further education and training to come together and have a unique opportunity to directly influence the further education and training service based on their needs by considering the following:

What is working in the Further Education and Training Service?

What is not working and how can it be improved?

The National Adult Learner Forum is an exciting new development for further education and training (FET) learners. SOLAS, the Further Education and Training Authority, have supported the Forum by putting the voice of adult learners in their Further Education and Training Strategy (2015-2019), and they have specifically assigned this work to AONTAS.

Learner Engagement Seminar:

Further education and training practitioners are the key link to learners. Therefore, preparation for the National Adult Learner Forum involved a Learner Engagement Seminar last April 2015 for Further Education and Training providers. From this event we learned that learner engagement activities are happening formally, e.g. through Student Committees, and informally, e.g. through gathering learner stories, across ETBs.

Nomination Process:

Our goal now is to provide a national space for learners who are involved at local level. We are currently holding a nomination process where further education and training practitioners from Education and Training Boards and SOLAS funded community education groups can nominate a number of learners from a variety of SOLAS funded education programmes.

Outcomes:

AONTAS are confident that the National Adult Learner Forum will receive a balanced representation of learners who can have their say in order to influence Further Education and Training policy.
