Greet Dierckx: Social interaction and the exchange of experiences with peers

Short biography
I work as a neuropsychologist in a general hospital and organise psycho-educational activities for people with Acquired Brain Injuries (ABI). In 2023, we started an international operation with the neurology department for people with ABI and their caregivers.
My Story of Empowerment
My educational trip to Tenerife highlights the impact of adult education on individual and social development. During this trip, a group of people with Acquired Brain Injuries (ABI) and their caregivers were immersed in a program focused on brain health, personal development, and social inclusion.

The activities, including yoga and workshops on brain-friendly living, encouraged participants to actively work on their physical and mental wellbeing. This was further supported by the concept of "tiny habits" which promoted small, manageable steps towards positive change. The focus was not only on increasing knowledge but also on its practical application in daily life.
A crucial aspect of the journey was social interaction and the exchange of experiences with peers (nationally and internationally).
This helped in building social networks and provided a sense of community and support, which is invaluable for people who often deal with social isolation due to their condition. The journey emphasised the importance of inclusion, which is a core principle of the project. By teaching participants to appreciate differences and think more inclusively, the project contributed to personal growth while promoting a more inclusive society. Not only did participants learn to cope with their own limitations but also to transcend them and participate in a broader social and societal context.
The outcome of the journey was a demonstrable improvement in the quality of life of the participants, as measured by pre and post assessments. There was an increase in activity, better sleep and eating patterns, and greater engagement with social and natural environments. These changes illustrate not only the personal empowerment of the participants but also show how adult education can contribute to broader social changes. The educational journey to Tenerife shows that adult education can be a powerful tool. It supports not only individuals through education and social activities but also contributes to a fairer and more inclusive society. This project demonstrates that education can do more than just share knowledge; it can also improve lives and strengthen communities.
