Norwegian project needs European input

"Together with a group of teachers and researchers in Norwegian as a second language at Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences (INN University), I have received funding from the National Agency for Lifelong Learning in Norway (Skills Norway) to develop two courses aimed at teachers who teach Norwegian to adult immigrants. Both courses are of 30 ETCS, one is adapted to teachers who already have formal university level qualification in Norwegian, but not in Norwegian as a second language, the other adapted to teachers without such qualification. In line with signals given in two recent government reports on adult education and integration policy, the courses should support teacher competence development when it comes to helping adult immigrant to acquire language skills required by the work market.

The grant from Skills Norway not only allows us to write program descriptions for the courses, but also to build our university’s capacity to offer high quality teacher education in the area in question.

As part of the capacity building, we are planning to go on two study tours this spring. In February we will visit the National Centre for Swedish as a Second Language at Stockholm University and discuss relevant issues with colleagues there and visit institutions of adult education offering inspiring work market oriented language education programs for immigrants.

We are still looking for a destination for the second study tour, which will take place in the second part of May. First, we were thinking of going to UNESCO or OECD, but we would rather like to visit one or more academic institutions in Europe with an in-service teacher education program centered on language teaching for adult immigrants. We are particularly interested in institutions that are innovative in orienting the teaching towards the work market, both in the content of the program and in the way the institutions organize work practice for the students in course of the program.

There will be 5 – 7 persons in our group and the tour will last three days.
