Validation and Motivation for Non-formal and Informal Learning in Prison

An INNOVATIVE Project:

VALMOPRIS is an Erasmus+ funded project, supported by the European Prison Education Association (EPEA).  Professionals and teachers from seven European countries are working in close partnership to design, deliver and validate a wide range of non-formal and informal learning activities.

Our work will focus on KC5+1, the primary competence Learning to Learn, alongside a range of other European Framework Key Competences.

Our goals:

  • to maximise the motivational potential of non-formal and informal learning through the introduction of validation.
  • to actively contribute to policy discourse on prison education, and the role and potential of non-formal informal learning.
  • to influence prison services, raising the profile of the social and personal competences acquired through informal learning in line with the Council of Europe Recommendations on Education in Prison.
  • to establish a continuation of the train-the-trainer programme, designing it to meet the requirements of a KA1 mobility activity for prison teachers throughout Europe.

Our steering group has recently enjoyed a meeting in Bordeaux to ensure progress is on-track with the project.

We have completed our initial research - part of which involved input from those working in prison education across Europe - into the role of non-formal and informal education, its validation, and the competences most necessary within the prison sector.

  • 80% of those who responded considered themselves directly involved in the delivery of non-formal and informal learning.
  • 51% of those who responded believe that the value of these learning opportunities are not properly recognised by prisoners.

15 teachers have been recruited and have designed unique and wide-ranging non-formal and informal learning activities for delivery within prisons.

In Rotterdam, October 2016, we are excited to report that these teachers will be piloting the VALMOPRIS training course, which is a development of the LEVEL 5 validation approach. They will then deliver their projects using this training.

The research, findings and results of the project will be made available late 2017 to coincide with our conference and training event.
