Kuarki - traveller between the wor(l)ds - Interactive learning app to promote reading and writing skills of multilingual children

The aim of the project financed by Erasmus programme (KA2)  is to develop an innovative and effective method to help children improve their literacy skills, especially taking into account multilingual children, who use one language at home and another language at school. It does so by combining the know-how of the partnership in the fields of multilingual education, programming and publishing, hereby taking a multidisciplinary approach and integrating the teaching of several basic skills. The aim of the project is to produce a tool - an application for tablets - that will meet the educational needs of the target group and at the same time offer motivation and inspiration to read. The application is be based on the Content and Language integrated learning principles. With the use of the app, children can at the same time improve their literacy, science, ICT and cultural skills. The tool contributes to the availability of OER in six languages, including LWULs.

Additional value of the project presents the approach to include teachers and offering guidelines, methodologies and tips tailored for the use of ICT-based learning materials in schools. There is conclusive research evidence that learning mother tongues alongside the school language enhances not only the mother tongue competences but also the competences in the school language. This is very important if we think of migrant children, who often have more problems in schools, because they lack comparable school-language skills. Teachers should therefore also become generators of a positive attitude towards multilingualism, empower multilingual pupils and enable other pupils to benefit from the language diversity in their classes. With this approach they will not only strengthen basic skills of multilingual children but contribute to better language as well as cultural skills of all their pupils. This recommendation was given to the Member States in the Report for the EC by the European Civil Society Platform to promote multilingualism: "School systems should specifically support and value languages and cultures brought to the classroom by every individual pupil."

Using this free app children over age of 10 can expand their vocabulary and practice their reading and writing skills. The aim of the app is to contribute to closing the often existing gap between the language of the school and the home language, and to provide the readers with new and interesting knowledge in an interesting and fun way. Children who want to learn a foreign language and improve their reading skills can also be helped by using the app.

Together with the app comes guidelines for teachers and parents on how to use the individual lessons of the app as well as a multimedia library with other educational sources using computer-aided learning. Moreover, an overview of the languages of Europe, their history, fun facts, proverbs and so on,  is provided as well.
