For the last five years Inverclyde Libraries has been working with the council's Community Learning and Development (CLD) service to deliver the Six Book Challenge to literacy learners. It started on a pilot basis with a single literacy group with many of those honoured at the awards ceremony saying how happy they were to receive a certificate for the first time.

According to a recent European Commission report, social media are increasingly being applied in educational contexts. However, little research has yet been conducted on their use in education settings, and the number of practical applications is currently negligible. The small number of existing applications is limited to regular, formal education. So what about applications for the adult education sector? Researchers in this domain are often far-removed from day-to-day practice and lack perspective on real-world applications.

The Norwegian-English Duolingo version has been launched for tablets, mobile phones and PC. The application can be used as a fun and motivating supplement to language training for users who knows English.


The program is suitable for practising words and concepts in Norwegian, as users have to repeat and apply them many times before they are allowed to move on to a new subject. The more practise, the more points. If users do not practise regularly, they will lose points and have to revise exercises to strengthen their skills.

This piece of research explores the learner outcomes and impact of a group of community education centres operating from a distinct model of community education, named in this report as the social action model of community education. All participating centres are members of the AONTAS Community Education Network (CEN) and the hope is to use this research in the CEN’s work to contribute to the visibility and value of community education. A wide variety of benefits to learning were investigated including civic and social engagement, health and progression outcomes.
