Digital learning at work place

When young, people have an incredible learning capacity. However, by the time we get old, the motivation for learning decreases. It is logical that children are fastest learners, as they are curious in nature. The majority of adults accepts novelties with difficulties and firmly adhere to previously learnt things and information, which is unacceptable in today’s world of digitalization.

Nowadays there is a high demand for the employees capable of permanent professional training and adapting to new knowledge during their life cycle. Such requests mostly increased with the development of technological findings. One of the greatest cultural and intellectual changes of digital era is undoubtedly the availability of information from anywhere.

Digital learning technology was particularly developed by the use of smart phones. Today, we have a variety of knowledge platforms that may be installed by users via their smart phones, whose applications enable the availability of a myriad of information and data. One of such platforms is EPALE. The users are able to have an insight into certain topic in realistic time.

Appropriate use of Internet ensures finding almost everything we search for, by asking correct questions and visiting reliable websites.

What we knew before becomes less important in today’s times of digitalization, if such knowledge is inapplicable in practice and impossible to be used. Now, it is more important what we are able to learn now so as to become more competitive on the labour market.

Employers are now more interested in people who own certain skills and competences and who are ready to permanently be educated and improve in their profession. The capability of using data is actually the capability of turning the existing data into useful information.  

Today’s jobs and career development are frequently disturbing factors in our learning capacity, by placing great expectations and directing energy to achievement of results, not the acquisition of new skills. Instead of supporting the culture of learning, the majority of employers are obsessed with the results, incessantly expecting greater productivity and work, which may become the largest obstacles to curiosity and learning.


Selection of job

It is important to select appropriate environment which enables learning at the work place, supports us in developing new knowledge and ensures the improvement of the culture of learning, while achieving notable results in our work.


Planning of time

It is of great importance to plan learning at the work place, as the time is a huge obstacle to learning. Therefore, it is crucial to undertake our own learning process and manage our professional growth and development.


Removal of weaknesses

If we want to specialize for something new, we have to work on our weaknesses i.e. focus on something we do not know how to do. Our new strengths may only be developed by working on our weaknesses.


Learning from others

We frequently opt for learning during various trainings, but greatest learning opportunities are from the colleagues at the work place. Although formal learning develops the skills only in certain area of profession, spontaneous and social learning is more efficient for the acquisition of new habits and development of practical knowledge. The seeking of advice should not be regarded as a weakness, but the possibility of learning from others, through which process we always may learn something about ourselves.


The conclusion is that learning process should never stop. Regardless of our recent achievements and our current level of professionalism, our future depends on our capability to continue learning, particularly to apply digital technologies.


With appropriate use of digital technology we have the whole world in our hand.

    I would like to add that by using a combination of learning methods at the work place, all employees stand to benefit. Employers can implement a strong training strategy by making use of content that appeals to all learning styles through a blended learning approach. E-Learning systems like Moodle enable the combination of traditional face-to-face teaching with online learning to produce materials with a selection of learning activities and multimedia options (such as video, gamification methods, forums etc).
