Diversity in adult groups - how to manage

How does one cope with being an unusual student? How do we teach groups with a noticeable diversity of students effectively ?

We live in the age of individualism. Since childhood, we have been learning to express our individual needs and develop individual talents. Teaching, once so schematic and structured, now has to be individual and based on the needs of the individual. However, the financial capacity of students, their parents and local authorities is obviously too limited to teach each person separately. Languages and other subjects are usually taught in classes or groups. In English Unlimited and other private language schools we try to make these groups as small as possible, but it happens that there are noticeable discrepancies between the students.

Diversity in groups can be seen for example in different student personalities: some are calm and methodical, others prefer dynamic activities drawing on their own imagination. Of course, men and women learn together. More and more frequently we can see people of different nationalities and religions. There are some differences in language levels and skills. To make matters worse, there are various political beliefs - recently a common cause of many misunderstandings and heated debates. Teachers are faced with the challenge of teaching these people together and delivering classes to so many different people in an effective manner.

The problems described above are the daily lives of teachers. We all deal with this issue somehow. It was in Spain that the idea of a project was born that would help teachers in this difficult task. In Escuela Oficial de Idiomas Alcalá de Guadaíra the idea of the ADALL project ("Attending Diversity in Adult Language Learning") was conceived to help solve the problem.

We have been working with other partners on the ADALL project for a long time now. The project is coming to an end and its products are slowly being developed. They are ready to use and designed to help teachers in this difficult task. Teachers interested in the problem can visit the FB https://www.facebook.com/ADALLproject/.

The project aimed to develop a handbook with practical exercises. In order to make it easier for teachers to access it, a mobile application has been developed which includes all these products together. It will add the last missing elements, but is already an interesting source of information and exercises related to the topic. The application can already be downloaded from the IOS and ANDROID mobile devices store. That is, the APP store and the Play store.
