Join the #LiteracyChallenge!
Join us in celebrating International Literacy Day on September 8! Taikoja, the coordination project for Finnish ESF-funded basic skills projects, challenges you, your learners, friends and colleagues to take part in its second Literacy Challenge on social media.
How is literacy present in your everyday life? Take a photo to show in which kinds of situations literacy was of use to you. Share the photo on social media. Use the hashtags #LiteracyChallenge and #LiteracyDay (in Finnish we also use the hashtags #lukutaitohaaste and #lukutaitopäivä). Don’t forget to challenge your friends as well! We hope you’ll share your photos close to International Literacy Day on September 8. N.B. If you take photos of other people who can be recognised, please ask for their permission. Feel free to share as many literacy selfies as you can!
Even adults need to improve their reading skills
Literacy is a human right. It is a basic skill that is, however, not mastered by all adults. Fortunately, you can improve your literacy skills throughout your life. Reading skills can be improved through education, tools and access.
The Taikoja project wants to highlight the importance of literacy at the beginning of September. The first week of September ends with the UN International Literacy Day on September 8. Literacy Day is a reminder of the importance of literacy and the inequality caused by illiteracy. This is a vital issue also around Europe, as literacy cannot be taken for granted.
