Applied learning (Learning by Doing)

The project “Legal, Advocacy and Sustainability Support to Local CSOs” recognises that trainings as a form of capacity building activities provide sustainable results only if applied to situations of real life and actual relevance to the trainees. Motivation of the participants in the longer term is hardly possible to maintain without concrete outcomes and achievements (success leads to increased motivation). Also the training programs focused on specific organization that does not involve learning by doing method could easily result with 'training fatigue'.

Therefore, in order to ensure that learning is internalised and sustained through practical application of the knowledge and skills acquired during seminars the action applied the learning by doing method in the LAS program.  Additional reason why this method is foreseen is that it provides momentum for the design and implementation of community and advocacy projects that will continue after the project formally ends. The main types of learning activities were: (1) Tailored trainings or focusing on concrete topics of importance stated by the CSO in the needs assessment process, (2) Workshops, for focusing on the real-life issues of a particular group, and problem solving leading to a concrete result or product, (3) On-the-job-training for specific and reality-near problem solving and procedures development, (4) Individual mentoring and follow up, for ensuring tailor-made solutions to differing capacity building needs and (5) E-learning, a platform containing all training materials and tools.
