Safe Climbing

Safe Climbing is an Erasmus+ project that aimed to increase safety for people that work with chainsaws and climbing in trees as well as producing quality study material for climbing courses. The countries involved in the project where Iceland, Denmark and Slovenia.

The project was accepted for an Erasmus grant in 2016. In August 2019 the final conference as well as a workshop was hosted in Reykjavik, Iceland as a final event for this great Erasmus project. The project Safe Climbing was also selected as best practice Erasmus+ project on Inclusion in Iceland in 2019, for promoting equal opportunities for participation. 

The focus of the project was to set up programs and courses for 15-20 students from the participating countries, where the students would be trained in climbing and using a chainsaw to fell and/or prune large trees (arborist). Some of the students would also continue their training and become climbing teachers in their home countries in the next few years.

One of the project´s objectives was to incorporate distance education options into arboriculture courses. This would increase the chances for people that live remotely or have busy lives with work and family, to finish courses with less time spent at school. With added opportunity for education, the hope was to see a higher percentage of professionals in the field of arboriculture.

One of the main outputs of the Safe Climbing project was therefore new study material for climbing. The new material was to be easily accessible and useful for a broad spectrum of students no matter their background. Our partner in Denmark, Skovskolen, is the architect of the material as they have so many years of experience in this field. 

Distance education options in a field like this would require students to prepare well with reading and practice at home before attending school to finish practical training. The study material that was written through the project would help students learn the basics for climbing such as tying knots, checking climbing gear, filling out risk assessments and such in preparation for the practical training.

Distance education is the future as an increasing number of people seek education later in life after they have started a family. We need to be ready to greet them with education options that suit them.
