A UK lifelong learning strategy

The Learning and Work Institute, UK National Coordinator for the EAAL, draft report ‘The Impact of Adult Learning’, concludes that the UK needs to take the approach of a lifelong learning strategy that brings together education, health, justice, employment and other services in a coordinated effort. This is echoed by research undertaken by the UK Government’s Foresight team into lifelong learning and skills, as well as that commissioned by the Institutes for Adult Learning and presented to the All Party Parliamentary Group on Adult Education.

In the coming weeks in advance of the October conference ‘Adult Learning: Setting the Agenda’, a joint event between the UK National Coordinator for the EAAL and EPALE UK, we will be presenting a series of think pieces on EPALE. These think pieces introduces the themes of Health, Work and Communities and the contribution that adult learning can make to these specific policy agendas.

This Communities of Practice is designed to bring together the thoughts and views from those involved in adult learning.

Hello all,

Following on from the Mid-Term Evaluation Report of the Erasmus+ Programme, it becomes more and more important to demonstrate the impact of Adult Education on local communities and individuals.

The response of the European Association for the Education of Adults to the evaluation report makes this painfully clear, if ever the point needed making.

Hello everyone,

The EPALE thematic calendar is in full swing already. Read the summary of our first thematic month on "Culture and Heritage in Adult Learning".

February's theme is "Social media as a tool for adult learning". Let us know if you have any experience with this, whether it was good or bad, and what you would do differently.

Hi all,

This event is an interesting approach, I think, to developing a deeper understanding how inter-agency cooperation is currently not working in the Birmingham area and to engage health and social care professionals in developing solutions.

The piece of theatre has been commissioned by the Birmingham and Solihull Sustainability and Transformational Partnership (BSol STP) and is supported by the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

As we have seen, there’s a wealth of evidence out there that adult learning has a positive impact on our health and well-being.  Such learning may be full-time or part-time.  It may be short-term or long-term, targeted or general.  It may be formal, or non-formal, or informal - or more along this continuum.

So what are the best ways of taking this agenda forward?  Here are some areas for discussion:

1. Prescriptions for learning

WHAT DO WE MEAN BY ‘HEALTH’?

Health is ‘a state of complete physical, social and mental wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.’[1]  It is a broad concept, embracing as it does our bodies, our minds, our feelings about ourselves and where we live, as well as our ability to help ourselves and others.

Hi all

Last week at the Setting the Agenda conference in London, some of you got hold of the DRAFT report above.  Jan Eldred and I are gradually getting feedback from across the UK and we shall incorporate this into the final report over the next month.

So... if you have a copy, feel free to post your comments here. We won't be offended (honest!)

If you haven't got a copy yet, one is being prepared.  But here's the foreword as a teaser:
