BlueSky Learning Ltd was commissioned by Learning Connections to provide a programme of professional development seminars focussing on the teaching of reading to adults, aimed at adult literacies tutors across Scotland.  The programme was organised around three seminars in Glasgow and Edinburgh. This handbook has been created through an action research process carried out by adult literacies tutors who attended the course and from inputs delivered by researchers and professional experts from NIACE and the Institute of Education, London.

Golden Goal contains Basic Skills learning materials and Communication Training with Integrated Sport Activities and was developed as part of a European project. The Golden Goal project aims at empowering young disadvantaged adults all over Europe with improved literacy, numeracy and language skills, as well as with different social and communication skills. The innovative approach of the Golden Goal model matches the use of the sporting interests of young disadvantaged adults with literacy and numeracy activities.

Words and Numbers is an initial screening tool developed in Edinburgh to ask adults about their reading, writing and numbers. The aim is to help identify literacy and numeracy needs in 1:1 interviews. The questions take only TEN minutes to complete and give a reliable and user friendly approach to initial assessment.  It is not a detailed diagnostic assessment but it can help to identify those who wish to become more confident in their reading, writing and numbers.

The Introduction to Retailing pack is one of a number of packs developed in West Dunbartonshire to support literacy and numeracy learning in various career settings. This pack deals with training for a career in retailing. It supports the literacies requirements in this area.

The packs are very easy to use and can be used for several issues:

Lack of confidence by young people. Looking through resources and confirming the required knowledge for a specific career can be beneficial. It reaffirm to young person the skill they already possess.

This example uses Comic Life as a tool for evaluating the learning experience. It was used with a group of disabled learners who had been participating in an ICT class which had integrated literacies support. The resources explains the approach taken and gives examples of the resulting evaluations.

This initial assessment tool provides online assessment in adult literacy and numeracy for health workers. Each assessment takes about 25 minutes and online feedback is provided at the end on any mistakes. The resource includes audio.

This report explores how West Lothian encourage learners to reflect on their learning and its impact on their lives. The benefit is twofold:

1. Understanding and acting on their own reflections enables the development of the learning process
2. Discussion of these reflections supports the tutor to develop their teaching practice and best respond to the learner’s needs.

The report includes examples of the resources used for learner reflection.

The Literacies in the Community Resources were produced in 2000 by a National Development Project — Adult Literacies in Scotland. The Project was commissioned and funded by the Scottish Government and delivered by the City of Edinburgh Council.

This training is a basic introduction to working with literacies learners in groups. The introductory exercises are useful in helping the participants to get to know each other and feel part of the group. They can be used as introductory exercises at the beginning of sessions, or after a break to energise everyone.

The Dyslexia Handbook is a working reference source of information on dyslexia for use within the field of adult literacies work. The handbook covers general awareness of dyslexia and associated difficulties, guidance and assessment, some ideas on how to support learners, the use of computers and technology and suggestions for further reading.

Introduction to adult literacies learning is session 1 of the revised Initial Training in Adult Literacies Learning (ITALL) pack. This aims to introduce the ITALL course and set the national and local context of adult literacies learning in Scotland. It considers the importance of reflective practice for learners and participants, the concept of lifelong learning, the difference between formal, non-formal and informal learning and emphasises the role of evaluation during training.
