This report presents comparative results from PIAAC for Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. The five countries are labeled Nordic countries in this report. Iceland is not included because Iceland did not participate in PIAAC.

OECD published international PIAAC survey results in October 2013. PIAAC (Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies) is an OECD project, which has covered 24 countries to date. The international OECD report is the most comprehensive study of adult skills ever undertaken.

This study, provided by Policy Department A to the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs, gives an overview of labour shortages, looking at their types and causes, their occurrence within the EU-28 and possible measures to counter them. It finds that there are no overall quantitative shortages at EU-28 level in the wake of the economic crisis, but qualitative shortages, especially relating to skills shortages and mismatch, occur in several regions, sectors, occupations and Member States.

A Prison within a Prison’ is a short literature review by Dr Catherine Carroll, Dr Jane Hurry and Anita Wilson at the Centre for Education in the Criminal Justice System (CECJS) at the UCL Institute of Education. It was commissioned by The Bell Foundation to help inform its long term work with offenders and ex-offenders who have English as a second language. It looks primarily at the ESOL provision in the custodial setting.

This article is about education and learning for the ‘retired’. The evidence reveals a much more nuanced picture of capability among the retired. Comparisons are drawn with the early childhood sector, which had parallel characteristics but which has since moved rapidly upwards among policy priorities. In conclusion, the article argues that ‘active ageing’ rather than ‘lifelong learning’ represents a more promising embracing framework through which to develop learning in retirement and old age.

In vielen Europäischen Diskursen tauchen Bürgerkompetenzen auf: Im Rahmen politischer Bildung sollen Bürger befähigt werden demonkratische Prozesse zu begleiten und kritsch zu reflektieren - sei es auf nationalstaatlicher oder europäischer Ebene. In einem großen Projekt unter der Federführung vieler Wissenschaftlerinnen und Praktiker wurden Handreichungen zur Entwicklung der entsprechenden Kompetenzen erstellt und als Konzepte zur Weiterverwendung zur Verüfgung gestellt.
