The article is based on data and evidence from a project of ‘activist research’ in migrant and refugee social movements in South Yorkshire U.K. The article argues that migrants’ social movements have been neglected as important in the development of popular adult education in the U.K. The history of migrants’ social movements from 1945 is sketched to demonstrate social movement influences on the content and ideological assumptions of state provision of adult education.
Learning and identity formation are inescapable facets of the upheavals accompanying migration; movement across social space inevitably involves reflection, questioning and the need to learn new ways of being and new identities. Although migration is characterised by complexity and diversity, this paper suggests that we can identify key learning perspectives which illuminate the nexus between learning and migration.
Annex 2 provides information about the survey respondents. The RENEWAL project aims to strengthen the European Agenda for Adult Learning in the Southern and Central- Eastern regions, namely where participation in AE is low and there is less infrastructure. The report collates and analyses information on the implementation of the Adult Learning Agenda in the two regions, containing information about each of the countries concerned and a preliminary analysis of the main challenges, developments and issues.
