In this report the European Survey on Language Competences (ESLC) was used in order to identify specific factors to language learning that affect secondary school students´ proficiency according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). Variables related to students´ perception of the nature and quality of their lessons, the usefulness attached to learning the target language and the exposure to language outside school were considered in terms of system level policiess.

A review of existing research papers identified the non-financial benefits from further education and training.  It finds that while financial outcomes improve - job prospects, earnings, higher skills levels - the non financial benefits are significant and greater than the more quantifiable financial outcomes.

Including improvements in:

  • health and wellbeing
  • social interactions and cohesion
  • social mobility
  • communication and independence
  • reduced crime

This Communication follows on from the Barcelona European Council of March 2002, which had called for the establishment of a linguistic competence indicator. The ultimate aim is to provide Member States with hard data and comparisons on which any necessary adjustments in their approach to foreign language teaching and learning can be based. This Communication sets out parameters and management arrangements for implementing the Indicator.

This report summarises the findings of research conducted by the University and College Union (UCU) and the Centre for Education in the Criminal Justice System (CECJS) at the Institute of Education, University of London to learn more about prison educators and to explore the impact of offender learner funding on their professionalism and practice. To date, whilst there have been a number of significant reforms to the prison education regime, there has been a lack of research into the professionalism and practice of prison educators and their professional insights.

Parue en août 2015, cette note de France Stratégies, organisme public d'analyse et de réflexion, offre un éclairage crucial sur le phénomène de l'illettrisme en France dont les conclusions ont été déjà reprises par nombre d'acteurs du secteur. Les auteurs dressent ici le portrait des adultes français en matière de compétences de base et, bien que relativement optimistes sur leur évolution d'ici à 2025, proposent de faire davantage au travers de politiques volontaristes et d'allocations budgétaires accrues pour atteindre l'objectif ambitieux de 3,5% de taux d'illettrisme dans dix ans.

The Prison Service Journal (PSJ) is published by HM Prison Service. Its purpose is to promote discussion on issues related to the work of the Prison Service, the wider Criminal Justice System and associated fields.

It is hosted by the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies following the re-structure of the Prison Service and the loss of the Prison Service website.
