Family learning is good for improving adult language and maths skills, but also has a wider impact.

This report is based on additional analysis of the community learning learner survey, looking at who does a family learning course and the nature of the courses.

It goes on to illustrate what learners say the impact the courses has had on their lives, on aspects such as:

  • personal confidence
  • language, maths and practical skills
  • parenting, employment and further learning

The report 'Barriers to the use of technology in family learning' has been published by three learning organisations, SCOLA, NIACE and the Campaign for Learning. It is funded by JISC as part of project to support family learning practitioners and adult and community learning professionals to embed the use of technology within teaching and learning. The report presents the findings of a survey conducted with 131 practitioners and 88 learners on the barriers to the use of technology in family learning.

In his 2013/14 Annual Report for further education and skills, Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector raised concerns about the apprenticeships on offer in England. He was particularly critical of the low number of apprentices aged 16 to 24, the limited new skills developed by many apprentices and the mismatch between identified skills shortages and the apprenticeships on offer.

The global crisis has increased unemployment in the EU to unprecedented levels, yet many employers claim they have difficulties finding skilled workers to fill their vacancies. This report shows that most vacancy bottlenecks arise because of factors other than general skill deficits, including job offers of poor quality. Genuine skill shortages affect a small group of dynamic, internationally oriented European enterprises in specific economic sectors (health and social care, ICT, advanced manufacturing).

En continuité de la fiche sur la compétence de Marc Nagels, ce rapport interroge le terme de compétence en lien avec le terme de qualification. L'étude interroge les compétences mobilisées en situation de travail, notamment en littéracie et en numératie, dans 24 pays dont 22 membres de l'OCDE et en croisant différentes caractéristiques sociodémographiques. Si les tableaux et données sont parfois arides, les informations questionnent de manière pertinente les compétences en situation de travail et montrent la difficulté à en dégager des certitudes.
