Adult Education at Downtown Community Court: Ideas for program planners Introduction In the piece, “Reframing the Conversation: Respecting Basic Adult Education” author Lynn Horvat (2014) draws attention to the complexity of Adult Education and how it has been misunderstood. In particular, Horvat suggests that adult education is not simply a “one size fits all model” (2014, page 1) and should not be evaluated as if it is. Rather, adult education is a multifaceted system that needs to be thoughtfully and purposefully implemented.

The lyceum and chautauqua movements reveal how adults in the United States have been interested in continuing their education since 1826. These two general educational movements provided continuing education for adults in all walks of life. Developing an awareness of past and present paradigms in adult education can provide a road map for piano teachers to better relate to adult students who continuously desire the following benefits: accessibility to education, fulfilling musical experiences and improved mental and psychological health.

The lack of visibility of women in history has long been noted, and notably, the field of adult education remains particularly understudied from a  gender perspective However, in recent years, a  number of researchers studying various kinds of adult or popular education have become increasingly interested in women as audiences or initiators of adult classes or the professionalisation of women. In this article we will argue that “discovering” does not necessarily mean revealing unknown personalities. Various meanings of the word “pioneering” will also be discussed.

In this paper we analyse the impact of adult education and training on labour market outcomes. Using the New Zealand Household Labour Force Survey linked to administrative education and earnings data, we estimate that on average, studying for a tertiary qualification increases the likelihood of employment in the post-study period by 1-3 percentage points and raises annual earnings by about 5% for men and 12% for women. In general, women who study for a tertiary qualification realise positive and significant gains but the same is not necessarily true for men.

In the South African context, existing adult education and training (AET) evaluation models are lacking in comprehensiveness and fail to offer tools which guide organisational system evaluations. An understanding of the interaction and relationship between the various dimensions of a holistic system for the management and evaluation of AET is required. This study was aimed at identifying and describing evaluation system constructs which can provide performance-based evidence for AET organisations in South Africa.

The article seeks to reveal the theoretical bases of andragogy as a science. The issue of adult education is regarded separately from that of child education, and is known as “andragogy”. There are differences in children and adult learning. The basic assumptions about adult learners are different from those about child learners in terms of: his/her self-concept, his/her readiness to learn becomes increasingly oriented towards the developmental tasks of his/her social roles, a growing reservoir of experience.

The resounding message of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was ‘Leave no one behind’. Similarly, the African Union Agenda 2063 and the African Union’s Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA 16–25) aim to deliver on the overall goal for inclusive and sustainable development. In particular, the AU 2063 declaration promotes an ‘integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens, representing a dynamic force in the international arena’ (African Union Commission, 2015, p. 1).

International Large-scale Assessments (ILSAs) have become the quality checklist for education systems globally, especially since the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015. ILSAs not only claim to measure the quality of education systems but also compare them against one another. As its title highlights, this special issue of “Pedagogika Społeczna” focuses on women in the history of adult education. Today, similarly as in other domains of knowledge or activity, historians are returning to the past to re-visit some of its insufficiently studied areas (Duby, Perrot, Fraisse, 1994). In numerous European countries the place occupied by women in the development of adult education used to be one of research topics attracting least attention.

Roughly one third of a cohort drop out of high school across OECD countries, and developing effective tools to address prime-aged high school dropouts is a key policy question. We leverage high quality Norwegian register data, and for identification we exploit reforms enabling access to high school for adults above the age of 25.
