"Following the Coronavirus outbreak, the Digital Photography department had to switch overnight from face-to-face education to distance learning. This way of working had to be completely revised when the lockdown was implemented, but thanks to the efforts of the teaching team, the transition to distance learning and e-learning went surprisingly smoothly. In general, our Digital Photography students responded unexpectedly positively to this totally different way of teaching... admittedly this is, at least in part, due to the fact that there was no alternative available during the Corona crisis!"

The journalist, Nora Fridrichová, who has been dealing with this issue for some time now, draws attention to the fact that the group of single parents is relatively large in this country – consisting of 200,000 families, where the main breadwinner mainly works on a part-time contract. It took the government over a month to approve a support fund for this group."

The World Health Organisation (WHO) Global Age-Friendly Cities (AFC) Guide classifies key characteristics of an AFC according to eight domains. Whilst much age-friendly practice and research have focused on domains of the physical environment, those related to the social environment have received less attention. Using a Photovoice methodology within a Community-Based Participatory Research approach, our study draws on photographs, interviews and focus groups among 26 older Liverpool residents (60+ years) to explore how the city promotes respect and social inclusion (a core WHO AFC domain).

The education of older adults has been considered the fastest growing branch of adulteducation in post-industrial countries and one of the most crucial challenges facing current adult European education (Formosa, 2000). Early research on the learning preferences, motivations and trends of older persons – as well as the impact of learning on the quality of life of older learners – can be traced to the 1950s (Havighurst, 1953), even before the field of educational gerontology was formally established in the 1975 by David Peterson (1976).

This study is grounded in a social-cultural framework that embeds learning in social activities, mediated by cultural tools and occurring through guided participation in the social practice of a particular community. It uses conversation analysis as a tool to examine the structures of the talk-in-interaction of naturally occurring conversations between 11 pairs of older adult (aged between 65 and 92) and undergraduates (aged between 18 and 25) during a 6-week social practice of intergenerational digital gameplay.
