LESLLA is the international network for Literacy Education and Second Language Learning for Adults. Since its inception in 2005, it has widely supported adults with little or no home language schooling or literacy, to learn to read and write for the first time in a new language.

Every year, the network organises an international symposium which offers a strong starting point for the research agenda as well as a host of resources and strategies for LESLLA practitioners. Due to COVID-19, in 2020 the network chose to organise a virtual gathering, from the 5th-7th August. The gathering focused on distance learning and the incorporation of volunteers into online teaching environments. You can find this year’s proceedings and all those from past editions shared through a G-Drive folder.

“This doesn’t mean that the Symposium in Malmö, Sweden, is cancelled…” says Patsy Egan, President of the LESLLA board of directors, “…but we will postpone this gathering until it is safe, so that we can have the vibrant and exciting gathering that we are used to and which we want. We want as many people to be able to join us, as safely as possible.”  Therefore, the 16th Annual Symposium will be held in Malmö, Sweden from August 11-13, 2021. The hosting organisations are Hyllie Park Folkhögskola and the municipal adult education (Komvux) in Malmö.

So, if you work in the field of Second Language Learning for Adults, follow LESLLA Facebook page for more information about meeting dates, travel logistics, calls for proposals, etc. In the meantime, here’s a brief introductory video from Elisabet Mörnerud and Abdulkhadir Mohamed about the organising committee.
