In the years to come, Europe’s businesses will have to cope with the demographic challenge that comes with an aging population. It is vital then that needs of older workers are understood and that their knowledge, built up over the years, is preserved and transferred to the next generation.
A project in Upper Austria is dealing with these issues by helping SMEs make the most of their older workers’ skills and experiences. Generational Transfer provides free training to managers and personnel officers so that they can retain older staff and more systematically transfer knowledge to younger colleagues.
A mix of lectures, group work and one-to-one counselling is used through the project as participants work on topics such as demography, lifelong learning, active aging, diversity, health and work/life balance.
Support is provided over a two year period. Participants design an implementation plan so that their companies can make the most of the project’s teachings. The goal is to support 20 staff drawn from at least ten companies.
