STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS IN RESPONSE OF THE COVID-19 - Digital Education Readiness for VET students - Healthcare area

NEEDS

We are looking for partners in the field of Vocational Education and Training, more precisely for our Nursing Assistant students. It could be VET schools or any other partner in this area. In a nutshell, we want to use augmented reality in their training course, in response of the Covid-19 situation. More information below.

CONTEXT

In response of the challenges of modernizing our health system, the French government has initiated a plan called “My health 2022” in 2018. It supports the acceleration of digital transformation to improve patient follow-up and care. This plan prefigures many changes in professional practices within healthcare facilities. This sustainable transformation therefore invites all professionals to develop new skills.

Along with these changes, some professions sometimes such as nursing assistant seem to suffer from a lack of recognition and worry about their future. We can assume that this has a negative impact on career choices.

A study by the DREES (Directorate of Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics) on the nursing assistant profession, dating from 2019, indeed notes a decrease in the number of students by 6% between 2016 and 2019. Since 2014, a 42% drop in the number of candidates for the entrance examination is also to be noted.

Efforts are therefore being made to try to promote some of these professions. Several communication plans are being carried out in France, and bills such as the El Khomri Law (2018) aim to reassert the worth of these professions.

Since 2020, the conditions for admission to the nursing assistant course have changed, in particular with the suppression of the competitive entrance examination. The framework of the nursing assistant course is also soon to be reengineered.

Before taking stock of such measures, we think that it is important to create new forms of teaching to rejuvenate the subject. Digital learning, through its innovative aspect, represents a significant opportunity that fits in with the digital shift in the field of healthcare.

The recent COVID crisis has demonstrated the educational value of digital tools and highlighted the need to think up new educational strategies.

However, this unprecedented situation has also created its share of difficulties for the training of future professionals. In fact, in order to guarantee health safety for all, schools have closed their doors and some internship periods have been canceled. These measures therefore created an experiential deficit in some students, which had a direct impact on their professionalization. This seems to be all the more blatant when the course is short and when the work-study program is the essence of it, as with nursing assistant students.

Usually, pedagogical devices, such as health simulation, make it possible to fill this experiential deficit by offering the students simulated healthcare situations at school, which they will be confronted with in their professional life. While simulation shows beneficial effects on the acquisition of technical skills, it also turns out to be an excellent tool for working on the non-technical skills – soft skills – essential to the nursing approach. Students can thus work on and put into reflection their professional position, relationship-centered care, and collaboration.

This tool is widely deployed in our training courses, but it now seems interesting to supplement it by bringing a digital dimension to it. To do this, we propose the creation of an immersive and inclusive digital device, allowing the student to confront prevalent relational situations.

INTELLECTUAL OUTPUTS

1 / Video library of immersive emblematic clinical situations

Goals:

Create mini video sequences to allow students to comprehend immersive experiential clinical situations

Modalities:

Several videos will be created from emblematic clinical situations. After viewing the sequences, the student will be confronted with different clinical situations and questioned on his ability to act as a protagonist.

A pedagogical path to develop the reflective capacities of students will be developed, including debriefings to support them.

2 / Immersive augmented reality tool

Goals:

Experiencing prevalent clinical situations in augmented reality, in order to understand clinical situations as closely as possible

Modalities:

The student evolves in an environment which is partly recontextualized thanks to the digital tool, as closely as possible to the reality on the ground, in order to understand structured and simulated care situations.

A pedagogical path to develop the reflective capacities of students will be developed, including debriefings to support them.
