Mitigating Educational Disadvantage during the COVID-19 Crisis

, Lucia Iacovone
Kieli: EN

A major concern in these unprecedented times goes to those who were suffering an educational disadvantage before the crisis and would be left even further behind after the crisis.

In order to prevent this outcome, AONTAS is working hard to make sure that the voices of adult and community education, providers and learners around Ireland are heard and acted upon in the Government’s planning.

At the moment AONTAS is actively involved in 4 subcommittees:

  • COVID-19 Tertiary Education Steering Group (DES

  • Mitigating Educational Disadvantage including Community Education (MED Group)

  • Immediate Operations Coordination Group

  • The Quality, Integrity and Reputation Working Group

AONTAS has implemented a series of tools to maintain the dialogue open and up to date with member and adult learners with the challenges faced during the crisis. Few of these tools include a call to local communities around Ireland, a virtual FET Learner Forum to identify learner’s needs, hosting an online member engagement webinar weekly with CEO Niamh O’Reilly to keep members updated and to hear their issues.

The ultimate goal would be seeing Ireland investing in its people in a time when it’s most needed.

We are specifically tasked with focusing on marginalised groups and community education. This will take up the majority of my time in the coming weeks as it will involve our daily involvement in three subcommittees but this is a very positive development for our members. We can actively work towards supporting disadvantaged groups immediately”

- Niamh O’Reilly, AONTAS CEO.
