Language volunteers in the Netherlands

Every week, around 16,000 language volunteers and 31,000 migrants, such as refugees and asylum seekers, talk Dutch with each other, so called ‘language coaching’. They practice everyday conversations and get to know each other's world. The main aim: use language as a tool in order to increase the participation of migrants. This type of practical language support provides more language knowledge, self-confidence and broadens the network of migrants. Other speakers, volunteers, municipalities and the whole society reap the benefits.

Coordinators are the linking pin

Coordinators arrange everything for language volunteers and migrants. They hold interviews, arrange trainings, give guidance, monitor all the differerent matches and have regular meetings with local partner organisation, such as the municipality. Also, keeping administration uptight and measuring the impact of the intervention, come along with the job. National platform organisation for language volunteers It starts with language (Het Begint met Taal) has developed an online tool that makes organising, supervising and monitoring language coaching easier.

What are the benefits

  1. Better guidance for language volunteers
Language volunteers receive practical tips, material and instruction movies on a weekly bases. Subjects in this e-learning are: how to give effective feedback, information about civic integration, how to work with material, and so forth.
  2. Easy monitoring of ‘language couples’
Language volunteers and participants evaluate their sessions themselves. As a coordinator, you can see at a glace how the sessions went. If case something has gone wrong, you immediately get a notification via the system. At the start, the participant indicates his or her learning goal. Meanwhile and at the end of the trajectory the participant and language volunteer will reflect on this learning goals in order to measure the results.
  3. Work more efficiently
The online tool eases your administrative burden. And gives you information about the results that the traject has, for both the language volunteer as the language learner.
