EPALE’s thematic focus for July is prison education
The median European prison population rate is 115.7 inmates per 100 000 inhabitants. Meanwhile, a very small percentage of these people are qualified to undertake higher education and in many countries there is a high instance of early school leaving among prisoners. Low levels of qualifications have important negative effects on prisoners' employability upon release, which has been one of the key reasons for ex-prisoners to reoffend. That is why basic skills education and vocational education have an important role to play in the reintegration of prisoners.
Here at EPALE we appreciate the importance of prison education for improving prisoners’ employment opportunities, social inclusion and reintegration into society. Check out EPALE’s thematic page Learning in prisons where the community and the national teams have gathered interesting articles, useful resources and case studies on the topic (content varies based on your language preference). Visit EPALE regularly for new content in July! |
