Sending partners invited for KA1 course in Cambridge, UK : ‘Positive futures: Building cultural, linguistic and personal confidence’. For teachers /trainers/organisations working with adult refugees, asylum seekers and immigrants

Tuesday 28th August – Saturday 1st September 2018


This course is for language teachers/trainers working with asylum seekers, immigrants and refugees. Participants will develop their knowledge, confidence and skills around cultural diversity and how to support and motivate learners who have experienced trauma and discrimination and who are beginning to build new lives.

This programme can be funded through the Erasmus Plus KA1 Adult Education learning mobility programme. We invite individuals and/or organisations to apply to their National Agency to fund their place(s) - the application deadline is 1st February 2018.

Teachers/trainers from different countries will share different approaches to promoting lifelong learning, employability skills and empowerment across different countries and systems. The course will enable the development of best practice through sharing and exploring the effectiveness of different theoretical frameworks and approaches and practical tools. There will be a trip to visit and learn about UK organisations working with asylum seekers and refugees.

Over the 5 days, participants will gain practical skills and knowledge about:

  • The impact of trauma on learning and how to help reduce trauma and barriers to learning
  • Creating an empowering and motivating learning environment
  • Integration and identity: what are the issues, how do we enable belonging and re-build self-esteem?
  • Experiencing discrimination past and present: supporting learners to develop protective factors and resistance strategies
  • Practicalities and good practice in teaching and learning a new language
  • Developing cultural competence in working with participants from many different countries and systems
  • Strategies/skills for developing refugee/migrants’ ‘cultural capital’ in their new country
  • Working with other dimensions of diversity: identifying and managing different or conflicting needs (e.g. youth/age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, beliefs)

Who we are:

A UK consortium (led by Whitton Harrow Ltd and The Ubele Initiative) offering tailored training courses as a receiving partner for Key Action 1 Adult programmes. We are a diverse team of highly experienced trainers/facilitators from a variety of professional backgrounds and disciplines.
