In teaching others we teach ourselves
Andragogy, non-formal education, lifelong learning are activities which are becoming more and more significant and important in today’s society. According to research more than 70 percent of adults would like to learn, however accelerated lifestyle, shortage of time and money are the main obstacles which suspend adults from improvement. Therefore public libraries are becoming more and more popular among adults who want to learn and develop their skills with help of librarians-andragogues.
You may ask, who teaches them? There is saying that in teaching others we teach ourselves. However, in order to teach somebody perfect knowledge of some topics is not enough. It is not about information from encyclopedia which everybody can read, it is about the communication with various target groups, the ability to speak in front of audience freely, bravely and comprehensively. It is also about shaking hands, dry mouth or fear control. Many of these features are usual in andragogues practice and frequently it discourages adults from teaching.
Vilnius County Adomas Mickevicius Public Library with partners from Bulgaria, Lithuania and Latvia in autumn of 2017 will launch virtual learning platform. In this platform all future or current andragogues will be able to improve their knowledge about adults teaching in any time. These trainings will be consisted from following topics: curriculum training principles, adults teaching and learning methods, effective communication and work with librarians target audiences. After participants will gain theoretical knowledge and implement all practical tasks, they will be able to take a test and get certificate from specific topics or all program.
After the program will be launched the material of modules will be constantly updated. Also certificated participants will be able to continue their participation in learning program as mentors of new participants. Moreover all participants will have opportunity to create the content of the platform, share interesting information, stories of success and communicate with other users. So it is hoping that new learning platform will encourage continuous process and include more and more librarians and people of other professions both from big cities and small towns or villages. With developed skills and new practice platform users will be more self-confident and this will encourage them to share their knowledge more willingly and actively involved in adults teaching.
