The Museum Unites Learning Community
Interview with coordinator of the project “Education in Museum for community” L.Valužiene (Lithuanian Association of Museums) and an expert A. Bėkšta covers learning problems in the museum. The project was designed for small museum educators, because the local (such as municipalities) Museum plays an important role in the local community. Thus, cooperation with the community is main goal of the museum's activities. In order to work, create, organize, develop and develop relationships with communities, the museum should be aware of the changing concept of community approaches, know the different types of communities and find out what practices apply when working with various community groups.
During the project, the participants conducted a survey of what local community members expect from the museum. The results show that people of different ages and needs take part in educational activities of museums. It was concluded that the information about the museum's activities must be spread through various channels: the museum website, social networks, e-mail, local newspapers, local radio and television. It turned out that adults are most interested in museums exhibits that are associated with any stories. Adults (as children), in the museum would like to be active: there is the need for the ability to touch the exhibits, games, interactivity. Revealed the need that the museum has to be a comfortable one, especially for the elderly people: texts should be easily legible, exhibits have to be in the right height; there is the need for a place to sit down to rest or sit down with a group (family, friends) to discuss, share experiences, clearly marked toilet.
It discussed the Lithuanian museums are not very friendly families concerned. Rare Museum focuses on needs of families, for example, practically nowhere is possible to find the place for the baby feed or for changing facilities (with the exception of the National Museum of Lithuanian Grand Dukes palace). Kids are not allowed to run and speak loudly. This limits opportunities for the adults with the kids and families to join the educational activities in museums.
