Adults learn from all the media that they see, hear and experience. Media has a powerful influence on all of us and can affect different aspects of our lives – from how we vote to who we are and how we think about ourselves and others. That is why it is important for adults to be media literate.

Being media literate means being able to access, analyse, and evaluate information, which we receive through media. Media literacy provides us with skills that allow us to:

Learn to think critically
Become smart consumers of products and information
Recognise point of view
Create media responsibly
Identify the role of media in our culture
Understand the author's goal

We would like to invite you to join EPALE’s live discussion on the role of media literacy in adult education. The discussion will be in English and will take place on this page on 27 September 2018. It will be moderated by EPALE Thematic Coordinator Markus Palmén.

Mediji - liels palīgs.

Dzīvojot 21. gadsimtā ir svarīgi apgūt mediju lietošanas prasmes. Tur mēs iegūstam mums nepieciešamo informāciju. Taču tam visam ir arī sava negatīvā puse - bieži vien arī cilvēki mēdz neizvērtēt informācijas patiesumu, tādēļ dažādiem stāstiem mēdz būt dažādas puses. Nevaru nepiekrist, ka vecāka gadagājuma cilvēkiem ir nepieciešams attīstīt savas mediju pratības prasmes, jo izglītības iestādē skolēniem pedagogi to iemāca, skatoties arī pēc savas pieredzes. Tādēļ arī tagad esmu tam pievērsusi uzmanību. Tagad jau zinu aptuveni kādiem interneta resursiem varu ticēt, bet kādiem ne.

Paldies, ka dalījāties ar šo tēmu un šī diskusija tiek pacelta, jo ir nepieciešams atgādināt, ka arī medijos ir jāuzmanās, lai gan 21. gadsimtā mediji mums ir liels palīgs.

Myself&Europe Project

This a very interesting and preponderant discussion. We need to train and develop these soft skills from the beginning, from children to young adults. To have the power to distinguish what is propaganda, what is true or buzz, if I can trust or not, in the end, If I can make an informed judgment. This is also the way to a more inclusive, tolerant and open society.

Medijpratība un kritiskā domāšana

Gandrīz katru dienu ir iespējams kaut kur lasīt vai dzirdēt informāciju par mediju pratības nepieciešamību ikdienas gaitās. Ikdienā izmantojam dažādus medijus, lai uzzinātu nepieciešamo informāciju, taču nereti neizvērtējam sniegtās informācijas patiesumu un pamatojumu.

Izglītības iestādes mācību procesa ietvaros daudz tiek runāts par to, lai skolēniem būtu prasme kritiski izvērtēt pieejamo informāciju, lai nekļūtu par dažādu viltus ziņu "upuriem". Skolēniem ir iespējas savas medijpratības prasmes attīstīt, bet kā ir ar pieaugušajiem? Vai viņi prot kritiski izvērtēt informāciju, kas ir pieejama interneta resursos? Ņemot vērā savus novērojumus sociālajos tīklos, varu secināt, ka nereti pieaugušajiem daudz vairāk trūkst šīs prasmes nekā bērniem un jauniešiem. Cilvēki notic dažādām viltus ziņām un kļūst par upuriem krāpniekiem savu prasmju trūkuma dēļ. Ņemot kā piemēru aptuveni 50-60 gadus vecu Latvijas iedzīvotāju, kas daļu savas dzīves ir dzīvojis politiskajā iekārtā, kurā ir bijusi cenzūra, viņam ir iemācīts domāt, ka visas ziņas ir patiesas, kritiski neizvērtējot to patiesumu un reālistiskumu.

Pozitīvi novērtēju, ka tiek veidots šāda starptautiska diskusija, kur tiks runāts par šo tēmu. Šīs diskusijas ietvaros, manuprāt, būtu noderīgi apspriest arī jautājumu par to, ka arī vecāka gadagājuma cilvēkiem ir nepieciešams pilnveidot kritiskās domāšanas prasmes, kas būs ļoti noderīgas dzīvojot 21.gs., kur nereti viltus informāciju no patiesas informācijas spēj atšķirt tikai jomas speciālists.

Evaluating online content

Media does indeed have a great influence on our everyday lives and we have become dependent on all our devices for different aspects of our lives. We are literally bombarded by information, online material and news all the time. The biggest challenge that many of us face is when it comes to identifying what is true and what is fake. And from my teaching experience, I have encountered many learners who are often at a loss when it comes to evaluating information.

I, therefore, thought of sharing with you this great article by https://www.educatorstechnology.com/ which provides tips to spot fake news. These tips will enable us to critically assess the veracity and credibility of online content. My students find the visual very useful especially since it is visually appealing and to the point.

Thank You for sharing this article and it really is as You say -such suggestions are helpful. Also in my opinion visualization and "keep it simple" information is a good start in our information ocean nowadays, but we should also work more on that aspect- that in practice these tips are followed as a habit in everyday life.
