Pantha rhei – everything flows

Twenty-five centuries ago, Heraclitus of Ephesus gave a famous thesis that the main element of philosophy, and perhaps of all life, is change. Despite the passage of time, the Greek philosopher’s words seem to be more relevant than ever. The twenty-first century is the century of changes: brutal and quick, with little to none time to adapt. In addition, the emergence of new technologies has left a lasting impression on all domains of life, including (and perhaps most importantly) the choice of career path.

This is a position paper where the notion of developing environmental literacy through inquiry-based practices is explored. The premise is that one would assume that teachers themselves would have to first become environmentally literate before they can effectively provide opportunities for students to engage in activities to develop environmental literacy. As environmental education is predominantly delivered through an interdisciplinary infusion model, the recommendation is for a teacher’s environmental literacy to be developed alongside their inquiry literacy.
