While Third Places are in fashion and we seek to have them play multiple roles in the city, they are by nature singular, adapted to their specific environment, and only exist and develop insofar as they provide answers to essentially local problems. Wanting to increase their number does not always make much sense. However, this singularity, this essential plasticity, does not prevent us from seeking principles of functioning that go beyond specific contexts, and which tend towards a form of universality. Thus, seeking to understand their challenges and their contributions allows us to build and to test hypotheses in terms of inclusion, citizenship and solidarity.

Following the last reform of ongoing vocational training, AFEST (Action for Workplace Learning) has become a teaching method in its own right. A formal training device, AFEST derives from precisely structured engineering. EPALE France has associated itself with the journal Education Permanente, issue No. 216 of which focuses on learning and training in the workplace, to propose a day of discussions and considerations of AFEST.

A formal education is often vital for securing places on courses and programmes, and getting your foot through the door when it comes to gaining employment and beginning a career. However, people gain valuable knowledge and skills from informal learning experiences which can have a lasting impact on their lives. This post considers whether educational institutions and employers should be paying more attention to informal learning when considering candidates and compares the two different learning processes.

A large group of people are not sufficiently educated to get jobs or function properly as citizens, a fact which has been substantiated in one study after the other.

It is not that campaigns or educational opportunities have been lacking, but those kinds of opportunities cannot solve the problem alone because a good portion of the people in question cannot find the proper motivation they need to overcome the limitations they have due to their lack of education.
