Educational institutions and sport and youth associations in the Reykjanes Peninsula (south-west Iceland) are key-stakeholders in the government-led action-plan aimed at strengthening the area, following the bancruptcy of the airline WOW-Air in the spring. As a follow-up of a meeting on labour and educational issues between Education Minister, Ms. Lilja Alferdsdóttir, and local inhabitants in April, a specific task force was established within the Ministry. Its role is to formulate and gain support for an action-plan, built on the vision of the local population and the government.

Funding of £100m for refugee English lessons has been removed from the Adult Education Budget. This has led to refugees feeling lonely, isolated and unable to secure work in the UK. Learning is a social, emotional and cognitive process. While the last is most strongly emphasized in many classrooms, the other two aspects are sometimes even ignored. However, we believe that the social and emotional processes of learning are the crucial part to increase motivation to learn. Since, in our opinion, teachers play a key role in influencing their students' motivation and learning outcomes, we see a need for professional development of teachers, especially in the context of disadvantaged learners.

The Free Thinking Programme is a special course designed for survivors of modern slavery and human trafficking. This is an issue that often goes unnoticed in the UK, where we don't expect such crimes to happen. However, with more and more slavery crimes being reported and over 130,000 people living as modern slaves in the UK, it is clearly a much bigger problem than first anticipated. In response, Northern College has delivered the Free Thinking Programme, enabling students who are survivors of modern slavery and human trafficking to gain an education and enjoy part-time residency in the college while they complete their studies. This forms part one of a two-part blog post.

The strategic partnership “Aufbau und Vernetzung von Stadtführungen in Gebärdensprache” [“Developing and Networking Guided Tours in Sign Language”] aims to allow deaf people to participate in cultural opportunities from which they are often excluded. Institutions from Germany, Austria, and Italy are working together in the project, which was launched in September 2017. The objective is to advance innovative developments in the field of adult learning and to discuss practical experience. At the same time, the project is the initiator of a European process.

Adult education plays a key role in imparting knowledge about democracy, politics, political processes and social structures, particularly important in times of economic and social change. It should empower people so that they are in a position to exercise their rights and help shape the way in which society progresses.

Tinkering creates a bridging point between a learner’s personal interests and experiences and a broad range of possible learning outcomes. It offers valuable opportunities to engage all students in STEM and fosters a more inclusive STEM education. In this way, it is very much aligned with a Science Capital Teaching Approach: fundamentally, it is a highly personalised pedagogy, which allows the learner to follow their own interests and set their own goals.

PBL Handbook Summary

Within the project of First Technical School Kragujevac, Serbia - Project Based Learning as a part of contemporary teaching we have made this handbook that may concern all secondary school teachers who are interested in improving their work.

We would like to share our experience acquired from our job shadowing activities in Italy and to encourage our colleagues to apply project based learning. Our students liked the project based learning classes, they were more active in studying  and that is why we hereby present two examples of our classes.
