It’s been just over two months since Adult Learners’ Week and, between then and now, we’ve had another week of activities with Family Learning Week – but what a strange year. COVID-19 has kept us at home learning rather than where we’d prefer to be, and for some this has meant that there’s been no learning at all. Not because they don’t want to, but because they don’t have the access or the ability too.

The annual conference has been the central event of the EPALE community for several years. It is where we socialise in person as well as learn about the achievements of this e-platform’s co-creators and about the new challenges brought on by the current European (adult) education policy, among other things. In recent months, the latter has been most affected by the global health situation. It has seemingly resulted in a re-focusing of values, priorities and approaches. Despite the difficulties imposed by COVID-19, adult education is gaining recognition and new opportunities for establishing itself.

Can we draw any positives from this pandemic? Yes. Almost instantly the global workforce learned to adapt and in many cases - work from home. In doing so, the individual as well as the company or organisation, learned to operate almost instantly in a new way. That resilience and innovation shines the light on endless possibilities for the future.

Chawan Ali was forced to flee Iraq in 2015, at just 15 years of age. After years of fighting and the threat of ISIS, her family were scared for their future. Chawan is now in the process of transforming her own life through study; helping to support and transform her family situation as well as working with Wrexham Town of Sanctuary to transform the way refugees and asylum seekers are welcomed in the town and across Wales. Her story provides a great example of how support for refugees and ESOL provision transforms lives. Chawan’s story is explored further in a special podcast series, Change Your Story, which was produced for Adult Learners’ Week in Wales.

Future of Ageing 2020: Together for tomorrow
Delivering a better society for all generations
Policy and practice is increasingly polarised by age. And the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has resurfaced a young vs old narrative. Yet in an ageing world we need to ensure that society works for all. The impact of longevity on society isn’t just about older people: it will impact everyone. Young and old alike.
Younger people are undoubtedly facing a tough future.

“Rural adults participate in education at lower rates than their urban counterparts. If rural communities and their residents are to compete and stay viable in a global economy that demands life-long learning, it is imperative to increase adult motivation to engage in education. Non- participation by rural adults will be examined through an investigation of the concept of rural, rural education, participants and non-participants, and barriers to and motivations for participation.
