The current heated debate on the opportunities to be gained from, and the usefulness of, adopting contact tracing and mobile tracking technologies to monitor and contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic across the world has recently brought to light a topic that, until a few months ago, was considered to be exclusively the stuff of experts. This is digital spatial literacy, the ability to use the properties of digital space to communicate, reason, and solve problems.

Els Van Raemdonck is an inspector of education at the Flemish Education Inspectorate in Belgium and is responsible for the theme group of inspectors for adult education. Due to the Covid19 crisis, the inspectors suspended all inspections to give the centers breathing space for their core tasks. All directors of the adult education centers and the centers for adult basic education received a call to find oud their needs and to support them in these difficult times.

As for my experience, all the learning at this time is done via digital environments. The importance of digital competencies and skills is more important than ever. One, as an adult learning provider, can do all the thinkable and unthinkable preparations for a course, but surprises still emerge.  It is impossible to be responsible for the digital competencies of the participators nor the teachers.

The state-run Yunus Emre Institute, which is charged with promoting Turkish language and culture around the globe, aims to provide education for up to 1 million distance learners as part of its online Turkish language program, the agency's president said.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, professor Şeref Ateş said the program offers courses in the Turkish language in four different languages and five proficiency levels.

Ateş explained that, given the vital role played by technology in modern language learning, the group launched the program in 2017 free of charge.

Turkey began airing broadcast school lessons on Monday as part of distance learning measures to prevent the spread of novel coronavirus.

National Education Minister Ziya Selcuk taught the first class to millions of students at 09.00 a.m. local time (0600GMT).

First addressing the parents, Selcuk said the world was going through a challenging process due to the COVID-19 pandemic and that schools were closed for a while with the launch of distance education.
