In 2020 the world seemed to stand still for a moment. Basic Education Center Antwerp (BE) also had to close its doors for a few months. “Like so many others, we had to look for alternatives to ensure that our students could continue to learn,” says director Inge Schuurmans. But the center did not give up and provided e-inclusive lessons to their learners. Distance learning is very difficult for low-literate adults, but it was also a new challenge for the teachers. However, the great solidarity among the teachers became immediately clear.

"What was produced in Covid19's emergency is not to throw away, because it represents a lot of work, sweat and learning by doing. No! It is the seed that remains and serves as a backup but also to make the reverse way of putting yourself at the service of face-to-face education in a path that has been made parallel and that will gain much more if it is made of bends and collaboration!"

We have learnt a lot form the Covid-19 crisis. We were forced to reinvent our old ways. We realised that there were a lot of interesting things waiting for us to experience but also that certain inequalities became exacerbated as a result of the crisis. With all this in mind, we intend to focus on three main themes. We will focus on all of them throughout the year, monitoring how things develop over the next few months and exploring each of them in our own time. We invite you to contribute, share your opinions, experiences, projects, and ideas! Here are the 2021 Thematic Focuses in details.

"This experience will bring about a lot of changes to adult learning. Even before the outbreak it was obvious that the classroom system, even if it does provide possibilities for socialising, was becoming old as a teaching model. When changes are the most stable thing in life, adult education cannot live by old principles borrowed from the primary school model."

The pandemic has prompted people to check themselves, their skills and their limits. Many have acquired skills that usually would take years. Unfortunately, the reaction came only from those who had a good context to move around. Others were unable to react or did not respond to the demands of the change. This has only widen the gap between citizens of different countries, cultures and socio-economic conditions.

There is the need of a system for adult training that takes account of these disparities and can provide motivation, triggers and continuous gratification:

Adult education was and continues to be severely affected by the public measures and directives issued by governments all over the world to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. There is growing concern that many adult education organisations will struggle to survive as the pandemic continues to make restrictive measures necessary. To get a clearer picture of the effects of this global crisis, it is important to adopt a perspective that goes beyond local or national circumstances and outlooks.
