"I started regularly offering coaching sessions. What made it a learning process? I had this preconception before Coronavirus that I was not capable of building a connection online. I thought of myself more as the sort of coach who brings her mentee to self-development through outdoor adventures. As it turned out, I was wrong. It is possible to build connections online, it is possible to be with nature and make this journey of development together online."

"It was not only the students who had to get used to using digital tools. As a teacher, I was forced to learn how to use them for the first time because I had never taught online before. The first thing I had to figure out was which tool to use for the virtual lessons and then I had to learn how to teach online. To find out which tool to use, I attended meetings (coordination between school teachers is essential), I signed up to webinars, watched tutorials, read articles, and spent endless hours sat in front of the computer."

When communicating with the clients of the trainings, I have noticed several times a kind of apologetic remark: "You know, older people also come to the trainings". Older learners acquire new information and work methods more slowly, but there is no special need. People who are involved with trainings should not emphasize the age of the learner. Due to the rapid changes in society, lifelong learning is a way of thinking and a way of life for vigilant people of all ages.

The most important thing is to keep in touch with your readers; preferably in a creative way. It’s important to remember not to overwhelm them with news, but to choose content that is relevant and valuable to them. Contact with co-workers is also very important - providing support for each other, providing help in using Internet tools, or coming up with joint ideas for new activities. Together you can do more, and you can do it better!

As quickly as the “playground” is changing and developing, teachers have to allow themselves to act according to the motto of “Leave some space for imperfection”. Looking back, Sonja is pleased to say that her experiences with online teaching were very positive and that it was really, really fun to experience intercultural competences in this new format.

In the Europe of the 21st century, with all of its societal challenges and cultural tensions, social inclusion is becoming the common answer and go-to strategy for a smart, sustainable and, not only ‘inclusive’, but also community-based future. Regardless of the level of awareness of the concrete application of such a holistic practice, social innovation is vertically mainstreamed into the majority of European local policies’ agenda. It is now considered the “red thread” linking the seven official flagship initiatives of the EU2020 strategy.
