Basic skills

Literacy, numeracy and social skills are fundamental to master typical situations in everyday working life. Competence deficits in this areas can prove to be an obstacle to permanent and successful integration into the labour market especially for migrants, refugees but also for locals.This is where the ERASMUS+ project “Workplace Basic Skills” kicks in!

Lifelong learning festivals were held in Malatya in cooperation with Malatya Governorate and Malatya NSS. Authorities stated that the Learning Festival is a set of activities that aim to increase participation in lifelong learning activities, inform the public about learning opportunities, encourage learning by having fun, and include artistic and cultural performances. and to enable individuals to participate actively in learning processes. Within the scope of the festival, various booths containing adult products were opened for public visits.

The Council of Europe are inviting everyone to take part in a language challenge around the European Day of Languages! The 51 challenges within the handbook encourage learners to go outside their comfort zone and take advantage of the opportunities to practice or learn more about a language.

We are glad announce that in the next phase of EBSN’s Capacity Building Series two thematic online discussions will be available on EPALE: workplace basic skills learning between 7-8 October and family literacy between 9-10 October.

The consecutive online events aim at generating discussion around two of the highlighted topics of the Capacity Building Series to explore the experiences from practice and policy. The results of the online discussions will be integrated into the upcoming CBS units: the OERs and MOOCs on workplace basic skills learning and family literacy.


Some of us probably are, but others aren't. Adults exposed to social exclusion and adults with low skills are unlikely to be prepared for the demands of today's world. This is why "Our Digi Space" was created - to improve the quality of life of these adults through the promotion of digital literacy.

Workplace learning in Germany can be approached through three projects and initiatives: AlphaGrund Bildung für den Arbeitsplatz, BasisKomPlus (Arbeit und Leben) and the Toolbox: Arbeitsorientierte Grundbildung (AoG). This section aims to give a basic introduction to the key materials of these initiatives.

The aim of SkillsPlus is to give adults the opportunity to acquire the basic skills they need to keep up with the demands and changes in modern working life and civil society. Skills Norway has the administrative responsibility for a programme directed towards developing basic competence for working life. The programme was established in 2006. Since then 30 000 participants received training at the workplace.

The Skills Highway has been established to help employers learn how workplace literacy and numeracy training can help them improve business performance. The Workplace Literacy and Numeracy (WLN) Fund is provided by the Tertiary Education Commission and manged by the Industry Training Federation. Workplace basic skills trainings have been developed and evaluated during the last 20 years in many countries of the European Union and beyond e.g. Canada, New Zealand, USA, Ireland, Norway, Switzerland and Germany. In the framework of this OER unit there will only be a selection of programs and projects portrayed: New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland and Germany.

Lifelong learning is an important component of the European Union (EU) strategy
for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. Promoting it is part of the EU
guidelines for employment policies as well as the EU education and training
strategy (ET 2020). Job-related adult learning and continuing vocational training
play an essential role in this respect. Beyond initial education, they help to meet
the main skills challenges on the labour market. Adult learning and CVET are
essential to appropriate skills development for employed and non-employed

Globalization and digitalization changed the type, distribution and requirements of jobs. With the inevitable use of ICT in the workplace, it became necessary for people to have the right digital skills for employment. However, less than one half of adults possess such skills (OECD, 2016), while half of the world’s population still does not have access to the Internet (International Telecommunication Union, 2018; Hernandez & Roberts, 2018).

The positive ageing indicators report is an outcomes framework to monitor trends and changes in the participation levels, health, and security of older people in Ireland, at a national level. The positive ageing indicator set was developed by the Healthy and Positive Ageing Initiative(link is external) and reported for the first time in 2016.

Holistic education is an approach towards developing educational courses and programmes within FGU whereby teaching is built up around complete wholes that are meaningful for the students to work with. As teachers within FGU, you all have ample experience planning instructive and motivating courses. This experience can now be brought into play in the planning of holistic courses across both general and vocational subjects.
