"For a longer time already, I had been thinking that I would like to participate in training that would give me a comprehensive overview of what the European adult education consists of. I was of course already aware of the basic facts and situation but, in the back of my head, I still had this idea that it could be interesting to delve more deeply into this by sharing practical experiences with course participants from different European countries."

Non-formal learning refers to learning not included in the official education provided by society, such as comprehensive school or other degree studies. Non-formal learning differs from informal learning which, in turn, refers to learning things through everyday chores and activities. In addition, non-formal learning is characterised by its target-oriented approach and includes support for learning in the form of, for example, liberal adult education.

The origin of the “citizen” Word etymologically extends to Ancient Greece. This concept is mentioned in Aristotle's Rhetoric for the first time in written sources. The citizen word is derived from the word” cite“ (or “city“), which refers to the ancient Greek city-states. However, the concept of citizen had to wait for the French revolution to have its meaning as a political identity (Boineau, 1998). Therefore, "citizenship” concept with its current meaning has entered our lives in the late 19th century and early 20th century.

It is important that people take part in social discourse and are active in their communities. This promotes a sense of solidarity and the basic values of democracy both at an individual level and to a wider extent in society. Citizenship education aims to increase such activity. Above all else, citizenship education means increasing awareness about each person’s rights, opportunities and means of making a difference.
