Children, youths, adults—when it comes to dealing with money, almost everyone still has something to learn. But what is the situation regarding basic economic education at German schools?

The origin of the “citizen” Word etymologically extends to Ancient Greece. This concept is mentioned in Aristotle's Rhetoric for the first time in written sources. The citizen word is derived from the word” cite“ (or “city“), which refers to the ancient Greek city-states. However, the concept of citizen had to wait for the French revolution to have its meaning as a political identity (Boineau, 1998). Therefore, "citizenship” concept with its current meaning has entered our lives in the late 19th century and early 20th century.
It is important that people take part in social discourse and are active in their communities. This promotes a sense of solidarity and the basic values of democracy both at an individual level and to a wider extent in society. Citizenship education aims to increase such activity. Above all else, citizenship education means increasing awareness about each person’s rights, opportunities and means of making a difference.
